Research
SYNBIOCHEM is applying synthetic biology approaches to engineer microbes for rapid, predictable fine and speciality chemicals production. Our expert experimental team are working with many groups within the MIB on diverse Grand Challenge and focused projects many of which have now been published.
SYNBIOCHEM also have national and international collaborations and are keen to work with Industry to help overcome some of the challenges of microbial chemicals production. By linking with the Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub the Centre is addressing many of the scale up challenges of chemicals production.
BIOFOUNDRY
Over the past 5 years SYNBIOCHEM has benefited from extensive continued investment in state-of-the-art equipment underpinned by chemical, enzyme engineering, systems biology (computational) and microbial research expertise within the MIB.
CHEMICAL TARGETS
Targeting Chemical Diversity – To demonstrate the power of our SynBio Pipeline we have focused activity on 3 key chemical targets: Alkaloids, Flavonoids and Terpenes.
BIO-MATERIALS
The University of Manchester and SYNBIOCHEM have launched a series of SynBio initiatives around the development of high performance materials with wide ranging applications.
FACILITIES
Facilities, tools and technical capabilities – SYNBIOCHEM is extremely well equipped with High throughput robotics, mass spectrometry, picodroplet microfluidics, fermentation platforms and a wide range of design tools.
